Having weathered a challenging 2011 vintage in which an early frost reduced yields by as much as 50%, Paso Robles winemakers enjoyed a more “normal” growing season in 2012. A cool and dry spring was followed by a hotter than average summer compounded by a pair of late season heat waves that brought the grapes to perfect levels of ripeness. The sustained heat put water stress on the vines, which kept cluster sizes small while concentrating the flavors in the grapes that emerged. As a result, yields here were just average, unlike the rest of the state, but the quality of the fruit was impressive displaying rich color, deeply concentrated flavors, naturally balanced acidity and excellent structure.
